Saint Mark, evangelist

Today the Church celebrates : St Mark, evangelist

Saint Irenaeus of Lyon : “Proclaim the Good News to all of creation”

First Letter of Peter 5,5-14.

Likewise, you younger members, be subject to the presbyters. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for: "God opposes the proud but bestows favor on the humble." So humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your worries upon him because he cares for you. Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for (someone) to devour. Resist him, steadfast in faith, knowing that your fellow believers throughout the world undergo the same sufferings. The God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory through Christ (Jesus) will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you after you have suffered a little. To him be dominion forever. Amen. I write you this briefly through Silvanus, whom I consider a faithful brother, exhorting you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Remain firm in it. The chosen one at Babylon sends you greeting, as does Mark, my son. Greet one another with a loving kiss. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.

Psalms 89,2-3.6-7.16-17.

The promises of the LORD I will sing forever, proclaim your loyalty through all ages.
For you said, "My love is established forever; my loyalty will stand as long as the heavens.
The heavens praise your marvels, LORD, your loyalty in the assembly of the holy ones.
Who in the skies ranks with the LORD? Who is like the LORD among the gods?
Happy the people who know you, LORD, who walk in the radiance of your face.
In your name they sing joyfully all the day; at your victory they raise the festal shout.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 16,15-20.

He said to them, "Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents (with their hands), and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.)

Commentary of the day :

Saint Irenaeus of Lyon (around 130 – around 208), Bishop, Theologian and Martyr
Against the Heresies III 1,1; 10,6 (translated from the French)

“Proclaim the Good News to all of creation”

After our Lord had been raised from the dead and the apostles had been endowed with power from on high by the coming of the Holy Spirit (Lk 24:49), they were filled with certainty about everything and they had perfect knowledge. Then they, who all possessed equally and each one in particular the Gospel of God, went to the ends of the earth (Ps 19:4), proclaiming the good news which comes to us from God, and announcing to people the peace of heaven.

Thus, Matthew published a written version of the Gospel among the Hebrews in their own language, while Peter and Paul evangelized Rome and founded the Church there. After their death, Mark, Peter’s disciple and his interpreter (1 Pet 5:13) also passed on to us in writing Peter’s preaching. Luke for his part, who was Paul’s companion, recorded the Gospel he preached in a book. Finally, John, the Lord’s disciple and the same one who had rested on his bosom, also published the Gospel while he was living in Ephesus.

Mark, Peter’s interpreter and companion, began his edition of the Gospel in the following way: “The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in the prophets: ‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way.”… As we see, Mark uses the words of the holy prophets as the beginning of the Gospel, and he places the One whom the prophets proclaimed as God and Lord at the very beginning, as the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ … At the end of his Gospel, Mark says: “After he had spoken to them, the Lord Jesus was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.” That confirms the prophet’s word: “The Lord says to my lord, ‘Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.” (Ps 110:1)
