Tuesday of the 4th week of Easter

Today the Church celebrates : St Alphage

Saint Hilary : “The Father and I are one.”

Acts of the Apostles 11,19-26.

Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that arose because of Stephen went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to no one but Jews. There were some Cypriots and Cyrenians among them, however, who came to Antioch and began to speak to the Greeks as well, proclaiming the Lord Jesus. The hand of the Lord was with them and a great number who believed turned to the Lord. The news about them reached the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas (to go) to Antioch. When he arrived and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced and encouraged them all to remain faithful to the Lord in firmness of heart, for he was a good man, filled with the holy Spirit and faith. And a large number of people was added to the Lord. Then he went to Tarsus to look for Saul, and when he had found him he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a large number of people, and it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians.

Psalms 87,1-7.

A psalm of the Korahites. A song. The LORD loves the city founded on holy mountains,
Loves the gates of Zion more than any dwelling in Jacob.
Glorious things are said of you, O city of God! Selah
From Babylon and Egypt I count those who acknowledge the LORD. Philistia, Ethiopia, Tyre, of them it can be said: "This one was born there."
But of Zion it must be said: "They all were born here." The Most High confirms this;
the Lord notes in the register of the peoples: "This one was born here." Selah
So all sing in their festive dance: "Within you is my true home."

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 10,22-30.

The feast of the Dedication was then taking place in Jerusalem. It was winter. And Jesus walked about in the temple area on the Portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, "How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly." Jesus answered them, "I told you and you do not believe. The works I do in my Father's name testify to me. But you do not believe, because you are not among my sheep. My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father's hand. The Father and I are one."

Commentary of the day :

Saint Hilary (around 315-367), Bishop of Poitiers, Doctor of the Church
De Trinitate II, 8 (translated from the French - Soleil levant and DDB, 1981, p. 70)

“The Father and I are one.”

The Father is who he is, and we must believe that. As for the Son, our mind gets discouraged in trying to reach him, and with every word we hesitate to make it heard. For he is begotten of the One who is not begotten, the only-begotten of the one who is the One and Only, truth come forth from truth, the living born of the living, the perfect one who comes from the perfect one, power from power, wisdom from wisdom, glory from glory, “the image of the invisible God” (Col 1:15)…

How shall we understand the only Son’s being begotten by the One who is not begotten?… This begetting is not a break or a division…: “The Father is in me and I am in the Father.” (Jn 10:38) He is not adopted, for the Son is the true Son of God and says: “Whoever sees me sees the Father.” (Jn 14:9) He did not come into existence like other beings, obeying a command, for… he has life in himself, like the one who begot him has life in himself (Jn 5:26)… The one who comes from the perfect One is perfect, since the one who possesses everything gave him everything. The Father and the Son each possess the secret of that birth.
