A reflection on today's Sacred Scripture:

In today's Gospel reading there is this interesting line: "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; while I am on my way, someone else gets down there before me." (John 5:7) These are the words of a sick man, spoken to Jesus as he waits by the pool for someone to help him, so he can enter the healing waters. Then Jesus heals him!

We have heard a lot from scripture through Lent about water, baptism and these mysteries that water takes a part. The key in today's Gospel is that the man cannot be healed until "the water is stirred up." Reflect back for a moment to the gospel on the third Sunday of Lent, when we hear Jesus tell the Samaritan woman at the well, "If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water." (John 4:10) Could it be that our sick man at the well actually encountered the waters "stirred" up and received his healing without even realizing what was happening? Could it be he received these living waters without ever getting wet in the waters from the well?

I certainly think so. Jesus opened up for this sick man and now for all of us a path to the healing waters. No longer do we need to sit by the well and wait for the waters to be stirred up so we can enter the water and be healed. It is stirred up all the time for us -- in Him and in His Spirit. In Baptism and through the companionship of the Holy Spirit we no longer need to wait as the healing powers are with us constantly.
