The only way to stay king was to kill all wanna-be kings, Herod decided. So he set out to find this baby Jesus, the “king of the Jews.” First he needed to locate Jesus, so he asked the local bible experts “where the Christ was to be born.” Bethlehem, they answered, then they quoted the prophecy that Micah wrote 700 years earlier: “Out of you (Bethlehem) will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of My people Israel.” (MT 2:6)

So Herod called the Magi and sent them to Bethlehem, asking that they return and report Jesus' exact whereabouts afterwards.

The Magi followed the star until they found the baby Jesus and His mother Mary. Matthew says they “worshipped Him.” Not many people would worship a newborn baby, but these wise men somehow understood this was no ordinary baby. This was the Savior of mankind, and His deeds were already foretold.

When they were finished, the Magi “returned to their country by another route” because they had been “warned in a dream not to go back to Herod.” (MT 2:12) You may notice that lots of people are getting lots of heavenly revelation, now that Jesus is here.
