The book of Matthew is one of four gospels that give an eyewitness account of the life of Jesus here on earth. Matthew, the author, was a “tax collector.” That means the Romans paid him to collect heavy taxes from his fellow Jews, making him a traitor in the eyes of many.

Like the rest of the gospels, Matthew is written in the third person; Matthew doesn't refer to himself as me or I.
