Hello all

It turns out that their are people reading this other than me - which is great.

Hi - the anomalies which keep popping up, are spam email;, because some devious spammer has discovered the address to post to the blog (which I have now changed).

I started this blog intending to post my own stories as well as gospel stories, but in the event it was unmanageable given my own time limits. The site
www.dailygospel.org publishes dailt gospel excerts and mediatations, and as a temporary measre I set that up email forwarding to this site.

I hope if you read this you find it useful - I like it when I read it, and I intend to resubmit the new address to the site.

Cheer - Steve

The Catholic Calendar for Tuesday, May 3, 2005
Tuesday of the Sixth Week of Easter
St. Phillip, St. James, apostles

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Acts 8:5-8,14-17
Psalm 66:1-7,16,20
John 14:15-21

A reflection on today's Sacred Scripture:

Ever since Moses, God's people had longed to see Him and look upon His face.
But to look directly at the glory of God's face was to risk death. Even
speaking and writing His name came with risks. In essence God was something
far away that no one saw and no one spoke about in an intimate way. The
priests were necessary for everyday people to commune with God and even they
had strict rules on how this was to take place.

Given this, it is no wonder that when our Lord came his followers did not
recognize Him for what He really was. In today's first reading Paul goes to
great lengths to tell us just who saw the risen Lord and in the Gospel we
learn of two apostles - those closest to Jesus - did not see Him for what He
really is. The Lord tells Thomas that since he has seen Jesus he has seen
the Father only to immediately be asked by Philip, "Master, show us the
Father, and that will be enough for us." How they longed to look directly at
God, but also how hard-hearted they must have been! These men had been
conditioned their entire lives to believe they could never see God so this
should be no surprise.

Jesus continues to show Himself to us today, most wonderfully in the
Eucharist. As He told his followers, "Whoever has seen Me has seen the
Father." What a wonderful and glorious gift He has made to us, a gift which
countless followers prior to the Lord's visit to us would have given
anything to receive. And how blessed we are to receive this gift and see our
God in daily mass and adoration.

DAILY GOSPEL
«Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.» John 6,68

Monday, 02 May 2005

Today the Church celebrates : St. Athanasius

Paul VI: “When the Advocate comes, the Spirit of truth, he will testify on my behalf”

Acts of the Apostles 16,11-15.

We set sail from Troas, making a straight run for Samothrace, and on the next day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, a leading city in that district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We spent some time in that city. On the sabbath we went outside the city gate along the river where we thought there would be a place of prayer. We sat and spoke with the women who had gathered there. One of them, a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth, from the city of Thyatira, a worshiper of God, listened, and the Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what Paul was saying. After she and her household had been baptized, she offered us an invitation, "If you consider me a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my home," and she prevailed on us.

Psalms 149,1-6.9.

Hallelujah! Sing to the LORD a new song, a hymn in the assembly of the faithful.
Let Israel be glad in their maker, the people of Zion rejoice in their king.
Let them praise his name in festive dance, make music with tambourine and lyre.
For the LORD takes delight in his people, honors the poor with victory.
Let the faithful rejoice in their glory, cry out for joy at their banquet,
With the praise of God in their mouths, and a two-edged sword in their hands,
To execute the judgments decreed for them-- such is the glory of all God's faithful. Hallelujah!

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 15,26-27.16,1-4.

When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me. And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning. I have told you this so that you may not fall away. They will expel you from the synagogues; in fact, the hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God. They will do this because they have not known either the Father or me. I have told you this so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you. "I did not tell you this from the beginning, because I was with you.

Commentary of the day :

Paul VI, Pope from 1963 to 1978
Evangelii nuntiandi, ch. 7, §75

“When the Advocate comes, the Spirit of truth, he will testify on my behalf”

It is in the "consolation of the Holy Spirit" that the Church increases. The Holy Spirit is the soul of the Church. It is He who explains to the faithful the deep meaning of the teaching of Jesus and of His mystery. It is the Holy Spirit who, today just as at the beginning of the Church, acts in every evangelizer who allows himself to be possessed and led by Him. The Holy Spirit places on his lips the words which he could not find by himself, and at the same time the Holy Spirit predisposes the soul of the hearer to be open and receptive to the Good News and to the kingdom being proclaimed.

Techniques of evangelization are good, but even the most advanced ones could not replace the gentle action of the Spirit. The most perfect preparation of the evangelizer has no effect without the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit the most convincing dialectic has no power over the heart of man. Without Him the most highly developed schemas resting on a sociological or psychological basis are quickly seen to be quite valueless.

We live in the Church at a privileged moment of the Spirit. Everywhere people are trying to know Him better, as the Scripture reveals Him. They are happy to place themselves under His inspiration. They are gathering about Him; they want to let themselves be led by Him. Now if the Spirit of God has a preeminent place in the whole life of the Church, it is in her evangelizing mission that He is most active. It is not by chance that the great inauguration of evangelization took place on the morning of Pentecost, under the inspiration of the Spirit.

It must be said that the Holy Spirit is the principal agent of evangelization: it is He who impels each individual to proclaim the Gospel, and it is He who in the depths of consciences causes the word of salvation to be accepted and understood. But it can equally be said that He is the goal of evangelization: He alone stirs up the new creation, the new humanity of which evangelization is to be the result, with that unity in variety which evangelization wishes to achieve within the Christian community. Through the Holy Spirit the Gospel penetrates to the heart of the world, for it is He who causes people to discern the signs of the times — signs willed by God — which evangelization reveals and puts to use within history.

The Catholic Calendar for Monday, May 2, 2005
Monday of the Sixth Week of Easter
St. Athanasius, bishop and doctor of the Church

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Acts 16:11-15
Psalm 149:1-6,9
John 15:26--16:4

A reflection on today's Sacred Scripture:

In today's Gospel reading Jesus tries to prepare His disciples for the time
when He is no longer physically present and for the difficulties that
faithful discipleship will entail. It is a scene that could bring any
believing person to tears and despondency if it were not for the great gifts
of faith and hope, without which there would be real cause for real despair.

But, thanks be to the Almighty, He has given us Jesus who spoke the will and
pleasure of the Father that all who would believe in Jesus, might live
forever in His presence in heaven.

That is what we believe, that is what gives us hope in the face of otherwise
certain and irrevocable death. And how is it that we have come to have this
belief and why is it that such belief is trustworthy? It is through the
gracious will of God who has revealed to us in the Flesh, His Divine Son who
lived and taught and suffered and died on our behalf. And the rest of the
story is....

"Very early, just after sunrise, on the first day of the week they came to
the tomb. When they looked they found that the stone had been rolled back.
On entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, dressed in
a white robe. This frightened them thoroughly, but he reassured them. "You
need not be amazed! You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, the one who was
crucified. He has been raised up; He is not here." (Mark 16:2,4-6)

The Lord has risen as He promised! Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia

DAILY GOSPEL
«Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.» John 6,68

Sunday, 01 May 2005

Today the Church celebrates : St Joseph, the Worker

Latin Liturgy: “He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever.”

Acts of the Apostles 8,5-8.14-17.

Thus Philip went down to (the) city of Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah to them. With one accord, the crowds paid attention to what was said by Philip when they heard it and saw the signs he was doing. For unclean spirits, crying out in a loud voice, came out of many possessed people, and many paralyzed and crippled people were cured. There was great joy in that city. Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, who went down and prayed for them, that they might receive the holy Spirit, for it had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them and they received the holy Spirit.

Psalms 66,1-7.16.20.

For the leader. A song; a psalm.
Shout joyfully to God, all you on earth; sing of his glorious name; give him glorious praise.
Say to God: "How awesome your deeds! Before your great strength your enemies cringe.
All on earth fall in worship before you; they sing of you, sing of your name!" Selah
Come and see the works of God, awesome in the deeds done for us.
He changed the sea to dry land; through the river they passed on foot. Therefore let us rejoice in him,
who rules by might forever, Whose eyes are fixed upon the nations. Let no rebel rise to challenge! Selah
Come and hear, all you who fear God, while I recount what has been done for me.
Blessed be God, who did not refuse me the kindness I sought in prayer.

First Letter of Peter 3,15-18.

but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, but do it with gentleness and reverence, keeping your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who defame your good conduct in Christ may themselves be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that be the will of God, than for doing evil. For Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the spirit.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 14,15-21.

If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, which the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows it. But you know it, because it remains with you, and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me, because I live and you will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you. Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him."

Commentary of the day :

Latin Liturgy
The Pentecost Sequence: Come Holy Spirit

“He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever.”

Holy Spirit, Lord divine,
Come from heights of heav’n and shine,
Come with blessed radiance bright.

O consoler, wisest, best,
And our soul’s most welcome guest,
Sweet refreshment, sweet repose.

In our labor rest most sweet,
Pleasant coolness in the heat,
Consolation in our woes.

Light most blessed, shine with grace
In our heart’s most secret place,
Fill your faithful through and through.

Left without your presence here,
Life itself would disappear,
Nothing thrives apart from you!

Cleanse our soiled hearts of sin,
Arid souls refresh within,
Wounded lives to health restore.

Bend the stubborn heart and will,
Melt the frozen, warm the chill,
Guide the wayward home once more!

On the faithful who are true
And profess their faith in you,
In your sev’nfold gift descend!

Give us virtue’s sure reward,
Give us your salvation, Lord,
Give us joys that never end!

The Catholic Calendar for Sunday, May 1, 2005
Sixth Sunday of Easter

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Acts 8:5-8,14-17
Psalm 66:1-7,16,20
1 Peter 3:15-18
John 14:15-21

A reflection on today's Sacred Scripture:

"I am in my Father. You are in me and I in you."

Beloved Pope Benedict XVI in his homily on the day prior to his ascent to
the papacy, voiced the desire of Jesus to be a 'friend' to us. Benedict's
consolation finds voice in today's gospel as Jesus explains we 'love' Him by
keeping His commandments. This gift of our 'will' Jesus adds, multiplies
love: "the Father will love you and I will reveal myself to you."

Jesus' revelation of self to us is possible because we "will" to remain in
Him through an obedience of freewill that intensifies our giving of God-like
love. We want to give generously, all we are, completely, wholly and fully
to He who first loves us in this way, inviting us to love as He loves -- in
the Father. The honor, joy and beauty of this "beFriending" is the beloving
covenantal espousing; a union so intimate that our lives become one with the
Trinity who is One.

Jesus, who is perfectly and humbly obedient, confidently reveals the
reciprocating generosity of His Father and ours, "I will ask the Father and
He will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of
Truth, Whom the world cannot accept because it neither 'sees' nor 'knows'
Him. You know Him because He remains with you and will be in you. I will not
leave you orphans I will come to you. You will see me because I live and you
will live."

O Lord,
may we understand from You who are the Truth,
that remaining in You, and You living in us,
enables us to see and know You.
Amen

Saturday, 30 April 2005

Saturday of the 5th week of Easter

Today the Church celebrates : St. Pius V

Saint Augustine : “You are not of the world, because I have chosen you and thereby drawn you out of the world”

Acts of the Apostles 16,1-10.

He reached (also) Derbe and Lystra where there was a disciple named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek. The brothers in Lystra and Iconium spoke highly of him, and Paul wanted him to come along with him. On account of the Jews of that region, Paul had him circumcised, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. As they traveled from city to city, they handed on to the people for observance the decisions reached by the apostles and presbyters in Jerusalem. Day after day the churches grew stronger in faith and increased in number. They traveled through the Phrygian and Galatian territory because they had been prevented by the holy Spirit from preaching the message in the province of Asia. When they came to Mysia, they tried to go on into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them, so they crossed through Mysia and came down to Troas. During (the) night Paul had a vision. A Macedonian stood before him and implored him with these words, "Come over to Macedonia and help us." When he had seen the vision, we sought passage to Macedonia at once, concluding that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them.

Psalms 100,1-3.5.

A psalm of thanksgiving. Shout joyfully to the LORD, all you lands;
worship the LORD with cries of gladness; come before him with joyful song.
Know that the LORD is God, our maker to whom we belong, whosepeople we are, God's well-tended flock.
good indeed is the LORD, Whose love endures forever, whose faithfulness lasts through every age.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 15,18-21.

If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you. Remember the word I spoke to you, 'No slave is greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. And they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me.

Commentary of the day :

Saint Augustine (354-430), Bishop of Hippo (North Africa) and Doctor of the Church
Sermon 334 for the Holy Martyrs, §1

“You are not of the world, because I have chosen you and thereby drawn you out of the world”

All good and faithful Christians, but above all the glorious martyrs can say: “If God is for us, who is against us?” (Rom 8:31) The world conspired, peoples plotted in vain, princes formed a league against them (Ps 2:1); people invented new torments and thought up incredible forms of torture. They were covered with disgrace and deceitful accusations, they were locked into unbearable dungeons, their flesh was wracked with nails of iron, they were massacred by the sword, they were thrown to wild beasts, given up to the flames, and these martyrs of Christ called out: “If God is for us, who is against us?”

The whole world is against us, and you say: “Who is against us?” But the martyrs answer: “What does this whole world matter to us, since we are dying for the One by whom the world was made?” Thus, may the martyrs say and say again, and may we hear and say with them: “If God is for us, who is against us?” They can let loose their fury, they can revile us, accuse us unjustly, heap calumny upon us; they can not only kill us, but torture us. What will the martyrs do? They will repeat: “But surely, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life.” (Ps 54:4)… But if the Lord is the upholder of my life, how can the world harm me? … It is he who will also restore my body… “The hairs of your head are all counted.” (Lk 12:7) … So let us say – let us say with faith, let us say with hope, with a heart on fire with love: “If God is for us, who is against us?”

The Catholic Calendar for Saturday, April 30, 2005
Saturday of the Fifth Week of Easter
St. Pius V, pope

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Acts 16:1-10
Psalm 100:1-3,5
John 15:18-21

A reflection on today's Sacred Scripture:

After a successful first missionary journey, Paul embarks on a second
journey, finding in Lystra a promising young man, Timothy, who he takes with
him as companion. Timothy even helped write four of Paul's letters. We are
surprised that, after Paul's vigorous belief that circumcision was no longer
necessary for converts, he has Timothy circumcised "because of the Jews of
that region."

Here is a lesson about flexibility being needed for the bearer of Good News.
Paul tells us in another place that he was "all things to all men." He was
willing to bend on non-essentials for the sake of the core message of Jesus.
He never compromised on the fundamentals, however. He often incurred the
wrath of the authorities and the crowds, enduring beatings, stonings,
ridicule and imprisonment rather than water down the message.

For us, who must daily grow ever closer and closer to Jesus, we must keep
our wits about us, and with prudence assess a particular situation. Just as
Paul and Timothy were "prevented by the Spirit" from following their own
will in the choice of locales for preaching, so, too, we must never allow
discouragement when it seems God does not favor or support certain projects
of ours. Let us humbly accept failure in that area, and beg the Holy Spirit
to direct our energies and gifts as He desires.

Friday of the 5th week of Easter

Today the Church celebrates : St Catherine of Siena

John Paul II: Holiness with a Feminine Face

Acts of the Apostles 15,22-31.

Then the apostles and presbyters, in agreement with the whole church, decided to choose representatives and to send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. The ones chosen were Judas, who was called Barsabbas, and Silas, leaders among the brothers. This is the letter delivered by them: "The apostles and the presbyters, your brothers, to the brothers in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia of Gentile origin: greetings. Since we have heard that some of our number (who went out) without any mandate from us have upset you with their teachings and disturbed your peace of mind, we have with one accord decided to choose representatives and to send them to you along with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, who have dedicated their lives to the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. So we are sending Judas and Silas who will also convey this same message by word of mouth: 'It is the decision of the holy Spirit and of us not to place on you any burden beyond these necessities, namely, to abstain from meat sacrificed to idols, from blood, from meats of strangled animals, and from unlawful marriage. If you keep free of these, you will be doing what is right. Farewell.'" And so they were sent on their journey. Upon their arrival in Antioch they called the assembly together and delivered the letter. When the people read it, they were delighted with the exhortation.

Psalms 57,8-12.

My heart is steadfast, God, my heart is steadfast. I will sing and chant praise.
Awake, my soul; awake, lyre and harp! I will wake the dawn.
I will praise you among the peoples, Lord; I will chant your praise among the nations.
For your love towers to the heavens; your faithfulness, to the skies.
Show yourself over the heavens, God; may your glory appear above all the earth.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 15,12-17.

This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another.

Commentary of the day :

John Paul II
Apostolic Letter “Spes aedificandi”, §2-3 (translated from the French – DC 2113 7/11/99, p. 918)

Holiness with a Feminine Face

With the Great Jubilee Year 2000 so close, it seems to me that the Christians of Europe, who with all their compatriots are living a time of passage from one period to another – a time which is both rich in hope and not lacking in concerns - can benefit spiritually by contemplating and calling upon certain saints who in some way represent their history in a particular way… I believe that the choice of holiness with a feminine face is particularly significant within the framework of the ever stronger providential tendency in the Church and in the society of our time to acknowledge more clearly the dignity of women and of their specific gifts.

In reality, ever since its beginnings, the Church has not neglected to acknowledge the role and mission of women, even though this was at times conditioned by a culture that did not always give women their due attention. But step by step the Christian community has progressed in this, and in the process, precisely the role of holiness has been seen to be decisive. Constant incitement was offered through the image of Mary, “the ideal woman”, the Mother of Christ and of the Church. But also the courage of the women martyrs, who faced the most cruel torments with amazing strength of soul, the witness of women committed in an exemplary and radical way to the ascetic life, the daily devotedness of many wives and mothers in the “Church of the home”, which is the family, the charisms of so many women mystics who contributed to theological deepening itself – all this gave the Church precious indications for fully understanding God’s intention concerning women. In addition, this intention already found unequivocal expression in certain pages of Scripture, in particular in the attitude of Christ, to which the Gospel testifies. It is along these lines that the decision is to be understood to declare Saint Bridget of Sweden, Saint Catherine of Siena, and Saint Theresa-Benedicta of the Cross as co-patronesses of Europe.

The Catholic Calendar for Friday, April 29, 2005
Friday of the Fifth Week of Easter
St. Catherine of Siena, virgin, doctor of the Church

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Acts 15:22-31
Psalm 57:8-12
John 15:12-17

A reflection on today's Sacred Scripture:

"Love one another as I have loved you. . ."

What in the world could Jesus mean by this? How can we love one another in
the way He loved us? Are we each called to crucifixion and death for the
benefit of others?

Probably not in the literal sense that Jesus was crucified and died. And
yet, every day we are given the opportunity for numerous, nearly endless
small sacrifices, endless "deaths to self" that would be small crucifixions.
When someone wants something from us that we simply don't wish to give --
that is a call. When a child wakes us earlier than we would wish, or acts
up, or demands things from us that push our very limits -- we can give
ourselves up to the grace of God, die to self and love one another as He
loved us.

Christians are known by their love. Our love has one source, one completion:
Jesus Christ, Crucified, died, resurrected. He is the source of our ability
to love and the source of all love. When we love with His love we make the
resurrected Christ present to the person being loved. They may not see Him,
but they can come to know Him if we make Him present at every opportunity.

So, when the opportunity comes today: Love one another as Jesus loves you."

DAILY GOSPEL
«Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.» John 6,68

Thursday, 28 April 2005

Thursday of the 5th week of Easter

Today the Church celebrates : St. Louis Mary Grignion,   St. Peter Chanel

Thomas de Celano : “I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you”

Acts of the Apostles 15,7-21.

After much debate had taken place, Peter got up and said to them, "My brothers, you are well aware that from early days God made his choice among you that through my mouth the Gentiles would hear the word of the gospel and believe. And God, who knows the heart, bore witness by granting them the holy Spirit just as he did us. He made no distinction between us and them, for by faith he purified their hearts. Why, then, are you now putting God to the test by placing on the shoulders of the disciples a yoke that neither our ancestors nor we have been able to bear? On the contrary, we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they." The whole assembly fell silent, and they listened while Paul and Barnabas described the signs and wonders God had worked among the Gentiles through them. After they had fallen silent, James responded, "My brothers, listen to me. Symeon has described how God first concerned himself with acquiring from among the Gentiles a people for his name. The words of the prophets agree with this, as is written: 'After this I shall return and rebuild the fallen hut of David; from its ruins I shall rebuild it and raise it up again, so that the rest of humanity may seek out the Lord, even all the Gentiles on whom my name is invoked. Thus says the Lord who accomplishes these things, known from of old.' It is my judgment, therefore, that we ought to stop troubling the Gentiles who turn to God, but tell them by letter to avoid pollution from idols, unlawful marriage, the meat of strangled animals, and blood. For Moses, for generations now, has had those who proclaim him in every town, as he has been read in the synagogues every sabbath."

Psalms 96,1-3.10.

Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth.
Sing to the LORD, bless his name; announce his salvation day after day.
Tell God's glory among the nations; among all peoples, God's marvelous deeds.
say among the nations: The LORD is king. The world will surely stand fast, never to be moved. God rules the peoples with fairness.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 15,9-11.

As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.

Commentary of the day :

Thomas de Celano (around 1190-1260), Wrote a biography of St. Francis and St. Clare
Vita Secunda of St. Francis, §125 and 127 (translated from the French - Debonnets et Vorreux, Documents, p.430)

“I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you”

Saint Francis maintained: “My best defense against all the plots and tricks of the enemy is still the spirit of joy. The devil is never so happy as when he has succeeded in robbing one of God’s servants of the joy in his or her soul. The devil always has some dust on hold that he blows into someone’s conscience through a small basement window so as to make opaque what is pure. But in a heart that is filled with joy, he tries in vain to introduce his deadly poison. The demons can do nothing against a servant of Christ whom they find filled with holy gladness; whereas a dejected, morose and depressed soul easily lets itself be submerged in sorrow or captured by false pleasures.”

That is why he himself always tried to keep his heart joyful, to preserve that oil of gladness with which his soul had been anointed (Ps 45:7). He took great care to avoid sorrow, the worst of illnesses, and when he felt that it was beginning to infiltrate his soul, he immediately had recourse to prayer. He said: “At the first sign of trouble, the servant of God must get up, begin to pray, and remain before the Father until the latter has caused him or her to retrieve the joy of the person who is saved.” (Ps 51:12)…

I sometimes saw Francis with my own eyes picking up a piece of wood from the ground, placing it on his left arm, and scraping it with a straight stick as if he were moving a bow on a violin. In this way, he mimed an accompaniment to the praises he was singing to the Lord in French.
